Meet Our Camp Instructors!

Esther Smith

Esther SmithEsther brings over seven years of hands-on experience working with horses and a lifelong love of animals to her role as a camp instructor at Healing Reins. She is deeply committed to creating a positive, supportive environment where every child feels encouraged to learn and grow at their own pace. Esther is especially passionate about helping participants build confidence, develop strength, and forge meaningful connections with the horses in their care — believing that those bonds have the power to transform both horse and rider alike.

Janelle Chance

Janelle ChanceJanelle brings a rich background in education to her role as an instructor at Healing Reins, having spent years as an elementary school teacher in the Bend-La Pine School District. She began volunteering at Healing Reins in 2024 and stepped into an instructor role in 2025, drawn by the unique and powerful connections that form between humans and horses. Janelle’s experience working with young learners gives her a natural ability to meet participants where they are and help them thrive in a supportive, engaging environment.

Jenn Thomas

Jenn ThomasJenn’s connection to horse camp runs deep — she spent nine years as a camper herself, giving her a firsthand understanding of just how powerful and meaningful the experience can be. That personal history is at the heart of everything she brings to her work as an instructor. Jenn finds great joy in helping children build confidence, independence, and connection through horses, and makes it a priority to meet each participant exactly where they are. She celebrates individual strengths, fosters a safe and supportive atmosphere, and is dedicated to making sure every camper feels successful, seen, and ready to have fun.

Nuan Crowder

Nuan CrowderNuan first discovered her passion for equine-assisted services as a volunteer at Healing Reins in 2018, and went on to become a certified instructor in 2022. She is continually amazed by the profound power of the human-horse connection and brings that sense of wonder into every session she leads. Nuan finds deep fulfillment in helping participants explore and deepen their relationship with horses, and considers it a privilege to witness the growth that unfolds in the arena.

Meet our Healing
Herd of Horses

The equine members of our team are hugely important to us and are chosen very carefully. The ideal therapy horse is sound and unflappable, with a been-there-done-that attitude. Our herd members have had careers in dressage, high school equestrian teams, trail riding, ranch work, and more. Miles and experience add up to the quiet, assured horses our participants need.
